The Ultimate Guide to Family-Friendly Airports
With the right layover, the airport can be part of the adventure. Picture a play area built like a giant bus, a real aquarium with sea creatures in the terminal, and a slide tall enough to turn a four-hour wait into a highlight of the trip.
Before you book, check out the guide to family-friendly airports - the ones that turn "are we there yet" into "can we come back here?"
Seoul Incheon: the new world number one
Incheon just took the top spot for Skytrax’s 2026 Most Family-Friendly Airports worldwide. Terminal 1 has three separate Pororo (A South Korean children’s animated penguin character)themed playgrounds, including one with a boat-shaped slide kids can climb into shoes-off. Terminal 2 goes all in on another animated series - Tayo the Little Bus, with a giant bus kids can climb inside for photos, plus a mock security checkpoint that's great prep for the real thing later.
Nursing rooms run 24/7, with bottle sterilisers and warming facilities. Strollers are free at any information desk, and since June 2025, families with three or more kids qualify for priority security too.
Singapore Changi: still the airport everyone talks about
Changi held the number two spot this year, and it's easy to see why. The Canopy Park slide is still one of the tallest indoor slides anywhere, and the butterfly garden in Terminal 3 lives up to every photo you've seen of it. If your flight's delayed, there's also a free cinema. Two hours of air conditioning and a proper seat can save the whole day.
Munich: the one that got even better
Munich's Kinderland used to be good. It's been fully revamped since, and now has a giant climbable "Adventure Plane" kids can slide down, plus a cinema and craft corner for when they need to slow down. Staff supervise kids aged three to ten, which means you can drink your coffee while it's still hot. There's a separate area for under-threes too, with high chairs and a changing space.
Dubai: free, no booking, no fuss
The DXB Family Zone in Terminal 3 (between gates B7 and B8) is free for any passenger, no ticket required. The floor is designed to mimic sand dunes, giving kids room to run. If you're transiting through Dubai on a long-haul, it's worth the walk.
Copenhagen: playgrounds before and after security
There's an outdoor playground before security, with slides built into a giant wooden airplane, so kids can burn energy while you're still in the queue. After security there's another play area near Gate A and B, with a control tower and a soft play surface. A separate Baby Lounge has a nursing room and a microwave for bottle warming.
Vancouver: Sea creatures, see planes
Past security in the international terminal, YVR has a 114,000-litre aquarium with wolf eels, sea stars and around 5,000 marine creatures. It holds a kid's attention longer than a phone does, and it's free to wander past. There's also an observation deck before security, perfect if your toddler is plane-obsessed.
The right airport turns a layover into part of the trip your kids will remember. Pack snacks, pack patience, and if you can, route through one of these.
