We're on a mission to avoid that.
As parent founders of Keep Em Quiet, we fancy ourselves experts in taking the "baggage" out of going on holiday as a family. From the second you leave the house, to the moment you land at your destination, traveling with kids is unpredictable and stressful.
You can even say that you don't "go" on family holiday, you survive it.
With all the travel we've done, and the tips we get from other customers who are parents, we've learned a thing or two about how to minimize travel anxiety and put it together in our Traveling With Kids Survival Guide.
Boiled down, the key to easy travel is making sure your kids are entertained and comfortable. Do that, and they'll be distracted and tired enough to make a flight or long ride a breeze.
Entertainment - Must Have's In Your Carry On
Having things to keep the kids entertained in your family carry-on can make or break your flight.
After running a few test flights ourselves, we've collected a list of a few musts that will save you:
- Your child's preloaded tablet, kids headphones and something I came across recently, a headphone splitter - where both kids can use the same tablet and watch the same show with one tablet and their own headphones. Make sure everything is WiFi independent, otherwise it may not work on the flight.

A fully charged power bank and charge cable - there's nothing worse than remembering you packed it in the luggage when the tablet runs out of power

Books & Interactive Games - We try to keep screen-time to a limit, so having a substitute like your child's favorite book or an interactive game (like sticker book or drawing book) is a great alternative that stimulates the imagination. This is a key item in all Keep Em Quiet travel packs.

Comfort - The Key To A Successful Trip
As parents, we entertain our kids for two reasons - to see them having a good time and to get them relaxed. For the purposes of this survival guide, we want to make sure our kids are entertained so they aren't restless on the flight (and make us wonder in circles around the cabin), but more importantly, so they fall asleep.
When you make sure they're nice and cozy and pair that with a good toy, they'll be relaxed in no time.
- PJs & Backup Clothing: Pyjamas, toothbrush, toothpaste and super important....a change of clothes! There's nothing quite like a child vomiting on themselves 30,000 feet in the air and having nothing to change them into. On that note, a couple of plastic bags to put the vomit drenched clothes into if such an occasion arises.
- A compact warm fleece type jacket/blanket
- A pair of warm fleece type socks
- Kids neck travel pillow - there are loads of these on the market some better than others. We stock some character travel neck pillows that are reversible and turn into a plush toy so it acts as a toy and neck pillow - a double whammy!
- If you have a Plane Pal, the inflatable airplane bed and seat extender for kids, it should go in here too. It turns your seat into a bed so your little one can sleep comfortably!
