Top Tips & Tricks For Flying With A Newborn Baby

Flying with a baby can be a daunting experience for many parents, especially if it's their first time.

However, with a little preparation and the right mindset, it can be a smooth and enjoyable experience for both you and your little one.

Here are some tips and tricks to help make your next flight with a baby a success:

Plan ahead and book a direct flight if possible

This will minimize the time your baby has to spend on the plane and reduce the risk of delays and cancellations. Direct flights are also typically less stressful for both you and your baby, as they eliminate the need for layovers and the hassle of changing planes.

Pack your hand luggage appropriately

Pack everything you need for the flight in a separate bag, including snacks, diapers, wipes, a change of clothes, and any necessary medications. This will make it easier to access these items during the flight and avoid having to dig through your luggage. It's also a good idea to pack a few extra diapers and wipes, just in case of any unexpected accidents or delays.

Strollers & Car Seats

Consider bringing a small stroller or car seat for your baby. This will allow you to easily transport your baby through the airport and keep them comfortable during the flight. Many airlines will allow you to check your stroller or car seat at the gate and have it returned to you at the gate upon arrival, making it a convenient option for parents.

Travel Toys & More

Bring plenty of toys and activities to keep your baby entertained during the flight. This will help keep them happy and occupied, and prevent them from getting fussy or restless. It's a good idea to pack a variety of toys and activities, including books, coloring books, puzzles, and small toys that your baby can play with independently. KeepEmQuiet was created for this reason, and even though it's aimed at toddler age travellers and above, we do have some very useful products for infant travelers, such as these fabric books also known as busy or quiet books, they are interactive and perfect for little hands to fiddle with.

Comfy Travel Clothes For Baby

Dress your baby in comfortable clothing and consider using a baby carrier. This will allow you to keep your hands free and make it easier to hold and comfort your baby during the flight. Soft, comfortable clothing is also important, as it will help your baby stay relaxed and comfortable during the flight.

To Bassinet Or Not

Consider booking a bassinet or bulkhead seat if available. This will provide your baby with a comfortable place to sleep during the flight and give you more space to move around. Many airlines offer bassinets for infants, but these are typically limited in number and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. It's a good idea to request a bassinet or bulkhead seat when booking your flight, or contact the airline directly to inquire about availability. If you have a toddler traveling with you, our top tip is to book the bulkhead seat row, book the bassinet & get a seat for your toddler, then use a Plane Pal, so your toddler is comfy and can stretch out and sleep, your baby will sleep in the bassinet & you can enjoy a film & a glass of wine!

Travel Foods For Baby

Avoid giving your baby any drinks or foods that may cause gas or discomfort during the flight. This will help prevent any unpleasant experiences for both you and your baby. It's also a good idea to avoid giving your baby any new foods or drinks prior to the flight, as these may cause allergies or stomach issues. Stick to familiar, easy-to-digest foods and drinks that your baby is used to.

Temperature & Cabin Pressure

Be prepared for unexpected changes in temperature and pressure during the flight. Bring a light blanket or jacket for your baby to help them stay comfortable, and make sure to monitor their ears for any signs of discomfort. The cabin pressure and temperature can change during the flight, which can cause discomfort for your baby. It's a good idea to bring a light blanket or jacket to help keep your baby warm, and to monitor their ears for any signs of discomfort.

Don't be afraid to ask for help from the flight crew if you need it. They are there to assist you and make your flight as smooth and comfortable as possible. The flight crew is trained to help passengers with special needs such a new moms with newborn babies in tow!
